There are an estimated 4,800 black rhinos and 20,000 white rhinos surviving in the wild today. South Africa has the largest population of rhinos in the world. In the early 20th century there were over 500,000 rhinos and today there are only about 30,000 left world wide.
Since 2008 poachers have killed at least 5,940 African Rhinos. In 2011 the western black rhino has already been declared extinct by the IUCN, cause being poaching.
Vietnam is the largest consumer of rhino horns. There is belief that this protein, Keratin, in the rhino horns have medical benefits from curing cancer to helping a hangover. There is absolutely no significant facts proven that rhino horns have any medical benefits. You might as well be chewing on your own finger nails to cure your hangover!!!
Sadly, on average 1,338 rhinos are killed each year, about 3 per day.
